well friends,

Happy Halloween.
For Halloween, I will be jumping on a plane @ 7 AM to head to the Big Apple.
Its gonna be a busy week - I am not necessarily looking forward to it.
I'll be dressed as Princess Leia tomorrow (white dress rendition, not Bikini Jabba the Hut version) - and Paul will be Han Solo.

anyway, I apologize for the lack of writing last week.
and I will apologize in advance for the lack of writing this week.

and I must say, I am REALLY looking forward to thanksgiving. I am counting the days till I get to stuff my face with fellow Strannigans. I miss them all dearly.

the science of sleep (not the movie).

There are some days when the light at the end of the tunnel is very dim.
Other days, that light may shine brightly.
And, then, there are pockets of time -- months, weeks, etc -- where there is no light at all.
I think that now is one of those times.
For the last month, I've begun to hit snooze on my alarm clock. Just 7 more minutes of sleep, dammit! Never before have I been a "snooze" person. I've also started excercising, which supposedly makes one feel better, healthy, energetic, etc. I am going to have to disagree completely and say that exercise furthers my exhaustion.
I'm up to 4 cups of coffee a day or so. Never less than two.
I want to go to bed at 9 every night (tho, I never do. someone or something always coerces me against my better judgement to stay up way past my bedtime).
Danielle told me she's been feeling the same way. She went to a doctor and he told her to take vast amounds of Vitamin C, Vitamin B and an Immune booster. I'm a sucker of a daily dose of "Emergen-C" but apparently this is not enough to undo whatever it is I've 'done' to myself.

And on a day like today -- where I spent 12 hours of my day immersed in terrible pop music, schmoozing with the greats of the music biz, and selling discounted CD's to mindless children -- that I feel especially tired. And the tunnel feels especially long and dark.

And, as I dozed in Brandons car on the way home from the sad little city of Pomona, with the sweet sounds of Switchfoot (yes, Switchfoot) serenading my ears, I knew one thing to be true: sleep would come quickly to me tonight. And it will feel good.

But if I were a betting woman, I'd wager that my snooze button gets some love tomorrow morning. Because 7:30 comes awful early on a Sunday.

The Great Pumpkin / The Big Apple

I got my plane tickets to New York today, for the CMJ Music Festival.

So, its official. I will be spending Halloween in New York City.

Paul wants me to dress as a stewardess. He's going to be an airplane. And Matt Maust is supposedly going to be an air traffic controller (complete with those lit up cone-type things they hold in their hands to direct).

It frightens me a little, the great pumpkin in the big apple.

but then, I thought about it. Summer is there. Paul will be there. Nick is there. The Cold War Kids will be there. Sherwood will be there. And, maybe Nate Rose, Kristin, and Melissa?

This could be shaping up to be a very excellent holiday.

for some strange reason.

Today I decided to Wikipedia my birthday (Aug 16). I hadn't done it before, and it seemed like a good thing to do.

I already knew Elvis died on my birthday.
I found out that Steve Carrell and I have the same birthday (and Vanessa Carlton and Madonna).

But, then I found out about a lot of wretched things that happened on my birthday. Funny enough, there seems to be a theme. A lot of people arrested on my birthday, a lot of plane crashes, and a lot of Wars.

strange...

1928 - Murderer Carl Panzram is arrested in Washington, DC after killing 20 people.

1930 - The first color sound cartoon, called Fiddlesticks, is made by Ub Iwerks.

1942 - World War II: The two-person crew of the U.S. naval blimp L-8 disappears without a trace on a routine anti-submarine patrol over the Pacific Ocean. The blimp drifts without her crew and crash-lands in Daly City, California.

1946 - The Japan Business Federation, or Keidanren, is established, and Ichirō Ishikawa is appointed its representative.

1960 - Joseph Kittinger parachutes from a balloon over New Mexico at 102,800 feet (31,330 m), setting three records that still stand today: High-altitude jump, free-fall, and fastest speed by a human without an aircraft.

1966 - Vietnam War: The House Un-American Activities Committee begins investigations of Americans who have aided the Viet Cong. The committee intends to introduce legislation making these activities illegal. Anti-war demonstrators disrupt the meeting and 50 people are arrested.

1969 - Police raid on Spahn Ranch; Charles Manson arrested.

1975 - Serial killer Ted Bundy originally arrested for suspicion of burglary, only to later escape twice.

1984 - Carmaker John De Lorean is acquitted of all eight counts of possessing and distributing cocaine.

1987 - A McDonnell Douglas MD-82 carrying Northwest Airlines Flight 255 crashes on take-off from Detroit Metropolitan Airport, killing 155 passengers and crew. The sole survivor is four-year-old Cecelia Cichan.

2003 - U.S. Representative from South Dakota Bill Janklow hits and kills a motorcyclist with his car at a rural intersection near Trent, South Dakota; he will eventually be convicted of manslaughter and will resign from Congress.

2005 - West Caribbean Airways Flight 708 crashes near Machiques, Venezuela, killing the 160 aboard.

little blips

its been 3 months since I've smoked a cigarette.
Beck was slightly dissapointing.
Season 3 of LOST starts on Weds. I am stupidly excited.
Jamie got kicked out of the USA.
Linda arrived back in the USA today.
I've had to cancel multiple tours in the last few weeks. it makes me sick to my stomach.
I went to Sacramento last weekend.
Wine tasting with the 'rents at Apple Hill was just what my lil soul needed.
I found THE PERFECT PUMPKIN (you don't believe me? come to my house and see it).
I saw my friend from high school (Emily) and we realized we hadn't seen each other in 7 years. since I left high school. that made me feel old.
I want to ride bikes more often.
I want to buy a bike.
Got some good hits at the thrift stores this weekend.
I am VERY proud of my friends, the Cold War Kids (Cover of the OC Weekly this week, sold out show @ Detroit Bar).
I like having the CWK in Long Beach
I am going to start working with the Sound and Worship teams @ my church.
Beth Balmer is a newfound hero of mine.
I discovered how to get free music of myspace. revolutionary.
I got new jeans. not terribly excited about them.
I met some nice women who work in the music industry and we are going to have "women in the industry" dinner nights. no joke. it wasn't my idea.
I miss my family.
I drank 5 cups of coffee yesterday, simply because it was overcast.

Someone (a good friend) told me yesterday that my voice is their favorite voice to hear in the entire world.
And they meant it.
I think that's one of the nicer things someone has ever said to me.

thankful for the clouds

This last week has been hard.
And there's nothing more that I hate than a gloomy outlook on life when the sun is shining and its 85 degrees outside.
Finally, the weather suits my mood.

some great bellies ache with many bumble bees

in lieu of all the 'end of summer' posts, I feel prompted to give my own reflections about the changing of seasons.

In May and June I underwent a significant amount of changes. Paul moved to New York. Wyatt got a divorce. Jeremy came back from Europe unexpectedly. Erica and Cameron got married. I moved into a new apartment with Amanda and Kristin. Jamie went to Europe. I hung out with with Sam. Jamie got back from Europe. I stopped hanging out with Sam. I kept busy, I went to ridiculous amounts of shows. June came and went, a flurry of wedding activity and moving trucks. July and August came and went. I was hardly here. I flew to new York, I drove to Phoenix. I went to Portland. I came back to Long Beach and didn't know what to think. It didn't really feel like coming home.

And for the first time, I can see why. I haven't invested here. I have pulled away from the the people that know me best. I keep busy, too busy. I work a lot. and when I am not working I am at shows. which is still working (sortof).

BUT...I miss relationship. I miss people that know me and have known me for years. the ones who don't always need to know the backstory before a story...they just know.

so I made a list. a list of the people I want to invest in. a list of people I want to spend time with.
and I started spending time with them.
and its been great.
yeah, I still went to 3 shows this week. But I also had breakfast at Two Umbrellas with Erica and Cameron. And I had Margaritas with Myste and Katie and Melissa and Kristin and Amanda and Ericam. And there was lots of Project Runway. and The Warriors. its been glorious.

Its funny how something so simple can make a person feel sane again. I like it.
and Becca flew in yesterday. hooray!

So, I agree with Danielle. It just wasn't my summer. I spent a lot of time working towards worthless things. I spent a lot of time looking backwards. I've missed the old days. But now I look forward. I have a lot.

In the excellent words of John Cusak in "High Fidelity":

"I've been thinking with my gut alot lately. And I've come to the conclusion that my guts have shit for brains."

Its true on so many levels.

Thank you, John.

big plans for the weekend.

yes.
my plans for the weekend are as follows:

and thats about it.

Thursday, August 31, 2006

OK. so I lied.
I am going to see Bob Dylan.

HALLELUJIAH.

How did that all work out, you wonder? well, you're gonna have to ask me.

Tuesday, August 29, 2006

ug, I feel sick to my stomach.
I have a chance to get pre-sale Bob Dylan tickets tomorrow morning.
Somehow I feel this is my last chance to see him.
But I said no.
Because they are $90.
Not only can I not justify it, I just don't have it (money).
ug ug ug ug ug ug ug

Why Bob?
Why do you have such inflated ticket prices?

On a positive note: I am eating Honey BBQ Fritos and they have to be one of the most delicious mid-afternoon snacks imaginable. Full of awful things (and MSG!) but I'm not afraid.

nerderie

I was on Jimmy Kimmel last week (because one of our bands, Cartel, was performing)

You can watch the video here (you have to click on "Cartel's Honestly") : http://abc.go.com/primetime/jimmykimmel/garage.html

I'm in the front row, singing along like a nerd.

my other 2/3's

Becca and Linda just called me from Vienna, Austria.
Gosh, I love those girls.
Sometimes I wonder if it will ever be us three again. You know, like the good old days.
Probably in little snippets. Not 4 straight years of roommate-ness.
I guess that's all part of growing up.
Really, I just think I am grateful to have friends like them.
I know, I know, I am getting all sentimental.
But Linda and Becca are really, truly, the best.
My sisters and I had the discussion while I was home -- that no one really gets the Strannigan sisters until we are together. And then everyone sort of marvels. All our oddities and expressions and inside jokes somehow make sense in light of each other.

I feel the same way about the Triniti. We just get each other. They understand my obsessive-compulsive need for communication and the way I relate most life experiences through text messages ("And then he texted me this. and then I texted him this..."). I get that Linda is a zombie for the first 15 minutes of being awake (and this is accompanied by STOMPING). And I get Becca's obsessive-compulsive need to worry (and her occasional bouts of road rage).

I hope that you (oh person reading this) have someone(s) that relate to you on this level.
It really is a lovely thing.

SNAKES! (Or, more accurately titled: SOME PEOPLE ARE IDIOTS)

Recently, I had the thought that it might be fun to go watch Snakes on a Plane and bring a rubber snake or two with me into the theater. Then, at the opportune moment (i.e. a particularly stressful scene in the film), I would throw the snake into the crowd - and mayhem would ensue.

So, in my head, this was a funny idea.
I knew I'd never actually do it. But it was fun to think about.

Well, then some morons in Arizona thought it'd be fun to release REAL LIVE RATTLESNAKES into the theater during the movie.

YES, GO HERE TO READ ABOUT THE MORONS..

I just had to share.

Friday, August 18, 2006

its official:

I can rent a car now without paying 'young driver' fees.
Oh the perks of being 25.
Is there anything else cool that comes with turning 25? I can't think of anything.

its good to be back

Its been 8 months since I've been in Portland. I'm nearly 24 hours into my week-long stay and already I feel better.

I sometimes wonder if there will always be this struggle. The friends in California vs. the family in Portland. The job in CA vs. the quality of life in Portland. There are so many other pros and cons -- the list goes on...

Truthfully, I think that either place will always hold a little bit of my heart.

I just don't know which place will win out in the end.

For now, its California. But, Portland is calling. I know I will be back someday. I just don't know when.

owch.

Cold War Kids
“Hospital Beds”
[2006]

Like so many Facebook profiles, this Californian four-piece probably likes just about anything but country. Recently signed to Downtown Records, they cite an exhausting list of influences-- everything from Bob Dylan, the Beatles, and U2, to, several paragraphs later, Belle and Sebastian and Nirvana. In particular, frontman Nathan Willett needs to realize he can't be every singer he idolizes at once, because no matter how good the rest of the band sounds, his pompous delivery makes every song sound like a Jeff Buckley cover band playing a wedding while drunk. Here, what could've been a nice mixtape number snuggled in between humble Voxtrot and Antony and the Johnsons ballads blows a gasket, at times stretching for soulful Black Crowes heights à la "She Talks to Angels". I suppose hidden somewhere in between Dylan and Cobain there was a Crowes shout-out, but they could at least have paid homage to their heroes by writing a damn chorus.

- Pitchfork Media

* Lindsay's side note: Pitchfork sucks, I love this song. Sorry to my friends in CWK.

summer in the city.

Today was a nearly perfect day.
I woke up late, took a long shower and hopped on the subway with Paul and Summer. We met Nick and Shaina in Soho at Cafe Habana for a (late) breakfast. The coffee is fantastic and a dollar. Paul and I split the famous corn (which is to die for...) and I indulge in Huevos a la mexicana.

It was overcast, slightly muggy and we got rained on. I didn' even care. I was wearing my yellow peacock dress and my oversized sunglasses (that I purchased here for four dollars).

After breakfast, the boys parted ways with us. Shaina, Summer and I proceed to wander abut the city. We got iced espressos and visited Nick at American Apparel. Nick gave us a heaping discount and allowed us to buy things that we would never be able to afford.

Then, we mozied over to the Natural History Museum. Summer has an American Museum membership so admission for us was FREE. I saw lions and tigers and bears and koodoos and zebras and YES The Squid and the Whale. I agree with the kid in the movie, it is slightly terrifying.

We took silly pictures in front of dinosaurs and tigers and pretended they were eating our heads. We stayed until the museum closed and they made us leave.

Summer and I took a bus back to her (AMAZING) house on the upper east side. We bought a few groceries and returned home to make a spinach salad and home-made mac n'cheese.

And, here I am. In Summer's gorgeous NY apartment, listening to Tom Petty, waiting for my mac and cheese to be done. I am tired and I am happy.

disclaimer

I didn't realize the Snakes on a Plane video had the Samuel Jackson quote at the beginning of it.
I apologize if the language offends anyone.
Mostly, I like this video because I met the tall skinny dude last week and he was nice. And because its Snakes on a Plane. Seriously. Snakes on a Plane.

"i know you're probably used to being alone"

Invitation to understanding by MxPx.
Off of Slowly Going the Way of the Buffalo. I want to say 1998 ? 99 ? lets go with 98.
Granted, Slick Shoes was my favorite band at this point of my life. But, MxPx was a close second.

and guess what kids?
I get VIP backstage passes to see them on the 31st of this month.
Don't cheapen this for me.
So I haven't listened to their last 3 or 4 albums... WHO CARES?!?! Its MxPx and I will go and sing my little heart out and have one heck of a time. Rumor has it that they are playing mostlyold material this summer, anyway.

Thank you, Mike Herrera. You made my teenage years so muchmore exciting.
And, now, I'm going on 25...
and I still sort of love you. :)

I still look back to my Tanglewood days.

I went downstairs to put my laundry in the dryer.
We had been in the living room for awhile. Old friends, homemade burritos, and Sangria. There were a lot of puns being made. a few songs were even sung.
I walked downstairs for a minute.
Then back up the stairs. I opened the door and looked at my friends.
In a picture perfect (movie-esque) way i looked at them right as Billy Bragg began to sing his tune.
Way over yonder in the minor key.
and I remembered the old days. My tanglewood days. There are so many days and nights and things I have associated with this song. And I started to think about them.
And Amanda turned and looked at me. I stood akwardly in the doorway, staring at my friends with the backdrop of Bragg and Tweedy.
and she asked me "Do you have a memory with this song?"
And as I was hit with thoughts of mixed Cd's and Matt Maust my sisters' band and Jamie being an alt country star and driving out to Las Vegas...and the only answer I could conjour up was "yes. a lot."
To which she said, "Lets make a new one"
And I replied, "Ok. Tell me about this new memory"
And she proceeded to list off the events of the evening. Sangria, burritos, old friends, and a lot of general silliness.
And, I must say, I like the new take on the song. And the next time I hear the song, I will think about this. Maybe I will be lucky enough to be standing akwardly in the doorway in the presence of friends and I can think back to right now - because right now I am happy.

Thursday, June 22, 2006

I am in love with Regina Spektor.
I don't even have the record, I just listen to 4 songs on myspace.
but I love it. love love love it.

Saturday, June 17, 2006

At this particular moment, there are any number of things I could choose to be irritated about.

1. The severe lack of communication skills that I find most men have today.

2. The severe lack of vacation I have had in the last 6 months.

3. The severe lack of caboyhydrates and sugar I have eaten in the past two weeks (thank you, stupid bridesmaid dress)

4. My inability to pay my bills on time (or at all)

5. My piss poor choices in relationships

6. The incessant stream of bums in the alley behind my apartment (directly beneath my bedroom window) that root through dumpsters in hopes of finding bottles and cans.

Today, I let the bums win.
Today, they are my source of aggravation.
Today, I will blame them.
Really, they NEVER stop. I can't hardly sleep in this room because I battle the sound of clanking bottles and the stomping of cans. If I am really lucky, they heave the cans and bottles into metal truck beds with with fervor. How many cans and bottles could these bums possibly find in my alley, one might ask? Lord only knows -- but they sure find a lot. and they find them every night.

I've heard that a diet lacking in starch and carbs can lead to heightened emotions and listlessness?
Maybe that is my problem.

But really, all fingers point to the can stomping bums. I cant sleep with this racket.

i need a vacation

I have spent too much time living in my head recently.
there is a lot going on, and I just don't have the energy to expel on this here keyboard.

So I apologize for the uninspiring posts and surveys. Really, I know they are silly. I apologize to your eyes for seeing them.

I will be back (with dramatic reverb) soon enough.

I just want to get away for awhile. Arrowhead, San Luis, San Diego - Alaska, Europe, Cornerstone, whatever. If I have to go on tour in a smelly van - then so be it. Its just that Orange County steals your soul after awhile. And I want it back.

the next television addiction?

Now that LOST and America's Next Top Model are over for a few months - I need a new addiction.

Suggestions?

I was thinking:
24 (tho I've seen the first season already)
Scrubs
Alias
Entourage

what else?
c'mon people. I need to fill the void.

I'm lost without him.

my my my. what a clever play on words we have here.
you see, tonight is is Season Finale of LOST.
tonight, I have to part with my dear jack Shepard for awhile.
yes, i know he can be hot headed and irrational and sometimes he's downright terrible.
but I still love him.
all you Locke-lovers can continue on being 'men of faith'.
but, as for me -- I'll stick with my man of science. I strangely find myself identifying with him and his Saviour complex.
does that make me completely nuts?
probably.
all of that aside...
two hours of quality television programming: HERE I COME.

More Important Than Music.

Hey, so I just added a link (yes, yes right over there --->) to a site that a few of my friends started called "More Important Than Music". Its a place where the music community can come together and talk about things that are more important than music (i.e. poverty, the current crisis in Darfur, etc) and offer practical solutions and a place to discuss these issues.

I am quite proud of my friends for taking the time to do something impactful. Being a slave to the music biz myself, its very easy to get wrapped up in talk of albums, tours, etc. Its nice to see people who care about the state of our world.

so, check it out. they have banners and such for your myspace profiles if you so desire. or, you can just link it on your blog.

tell everyone you know. :)

THREE REALLY GOOD THINGS

1. I got my health insurance card in the mail yesterday. Holy smokes, that feels good. Welcome to being an adult, Lindsay.

2. I got an emphatic email from Jon from Man Alive yesterday - thanking me for my work and all the shows I've booked for them. I'd copy and paste it here, but it has a few 'unsavory' words in it -- but he essentially told me that I rule. And that was really nice.

3. Tonight is my first night in the new apartment! MY OWN ROOM! ME! BY MYSELF! TONIGHT! NEW PLACE!

yes, life is good.

a jewelry conundrum

Last night, while I was washing my face, my nose ring fell out of my nose and down the drain. Now my nose feels naked.

This morning, my teddy bear ring broke. I looked down and saw a flimsy gold band with NO TEDDY BEAR. it fell off somehwere. I just got it from Sam's box of treasures on Wednesday. bah.

what's next?
bring it on, world!
you think you can steal my jewelry?
THINK AGAIN!

Home is where the Hosty hangs her hat.

The new apartment is official. We get the keys this weekend!

For the first time in my adult life I will have my own room (except for brief stays at my parents house or the dorms). I honestly can't believe I have shared for this long. I am going on TWENTY FIVE years old, for crying out loud. But, thankfully my time has come. I have a room.

There was a small dilemma as to which room I should take. The master bedroom was tempting, but is more expensive. Personally, I'd rather save a few bucks a month than have the luxury of my own bathroom. Plus, getting my own room AND bathroom at once might be terribly overwhelming. So, now, Kristin and I are left to choose which of the 'regular' bedrooms we want. Mind you, both bedrooms are enormous. The furniture I currently own is enough to fill half of a room, so it will be interesting too how dwarved my things look in the new, BIG, room.

Here's the low down on the rooms: they are equal in size, shape, closet space, etc. However, one room is located in the back of the apartment and one room is directly off of the front room/living room. My heart (and my sleep patterns) are drawn towards the back bedroom, as I am a light sleeper.

But (and this is where YOU, the reader come in) - this is my question. As I am the notorious "hosty" (i.e. entertainer of bands, vagabonds, dinner parties, et al.), should I just bite the bullet and take the front room? This seems to make the most sense. I can't imagine Kristin having over loud and obnoxious late night guests, whereas I seem to make a habit of it. I suppose I should deal with the occasional late night revelry from Kristin and Amanda - knowing that I will most likely be the one to have frequent visitors.

Maybe I have answered my question already?

I think the front bedroom is exchangable for the peace of mind I will receive in having Kristin and Amanda sleep soundly in the back bedrooms next time Sherwood (or Careen, or Man Alive, etc etc) comes to town.

its a nice day.

I don't have much of anything to 'report', but it does seem a good day for writing.
The coffee shop I am sitting in currently is filled to the brim with other 'lazy sunday' types. I am sitting in very close quarters with an elderly gentelman who is scribbling notes on a yellow steno pad. He insists on engaging with me in akward conversation and I have humored him by taking out my earphones (although this means that Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is no longer the soundtrack to my blogging). In fact, the nice old man's most recent comment to me was his expression of surpsise about the speed in which I type. Wait, no, now he's asking me questions about computers in general. I don't think he's heard of the concept of wireless internet before. I will enjoy the akward conversation because he is a cute old man, and afterall, what am I actually doing currently? Nothing. That's the beauty of a lazy sunday.

My goodness. I wish I could describe to you the genius of this man. He's already expressed his disdain for rappers, communists, and democrats. And, come to find out, he is a landlord. That is his profession. He seems to approve of my profession, though I didn't bother trying to explain that I am an in house booking agent. I just said that I work at a record label - to which he repllied: "oh Classical? or jazz?". I told him, that no, we have pop and rock music, to which he then said: "Oh well, you don't have any of that rap music I hope! You wouldn't want any of those hoodlums hanging around."

Priceless.

Thankfully, for the sake of myself and my current conversation, we do not have any of "that" rap music. I have garnered his seal of approval.

And, now, Ron (as I just learned he is called) is off to get a sandwich. We wished each other the best of luck, though Ron said I hardly need luck. I hope to see Ron here again soon.

because its friday.

Your senior year in high school is supposed to be "the best year of your life." Let's see how much you remember.

1. Who was your best friend?
Abbie

2. What sports did you play?
Softball, soccer, I also ran track (briefly) and wore argyle socks to track meets.

3. What kind of car did you drive?
an 81 Honda Civic with Leapord print seat covers and a Ninja Turtles bumper sticker.

4. It's Friday night. Where are you?
The Fishbowl (our church coffeehouse/venue) or Denny's. Maybe Chevys. or TPing with Jeremy and Adam.

5. Were you a party animal?
um, not really. I thought I was punk rock. But, looking back -- going to see Sappo and Silage at the Fishbowl on Friday nights wasn't very crazy at all.

6. Were you in the "In Crowd"?
I think so? Homecoming, student government, all that jazz...

7. Ever skip school?
Sort of. Just took an extra sick day here and there. nothing big.

8. Ever smoke?
Nope.

9. Were you a nerd?
yeah, kinda. Straight A's and crap like that...

10. Did you get suspended/expelled?
not even close.

11. Can you sing the fight song?
not sure what you are referring to.

12. Who was your favorite teacher?
Mr. Thomasson or Mr Mahnke

13. Favorite class?
English (but only with Thomasson, not with Mrs. Fendley)

14. What was your school's full name?
Forest Lake Christian High School

15. School mascot?
FLC Falcons, baby!

16. Did you go to prom?
every damn year.

17. If you could go back and do it over, would you?
No way, jose.

18. What do you remember most about graduation?
I stepped on Abbie's toe and made it bleed. And I went to a dance party afterwards and wished I was with Phil T and not my boyfriend.

19. Favorite memory of your senior year?
hm. probably when a bunch of us girls went and forked/TP-ed Angie P.'s house and wore ski masks and dark clothes and wrote "Cruella Deville" on her driveway in toothpaste and Abbie was scared that we were going to die before she ever got to sex. It was mean of us (I know), but terribly fun.

20. Were you ever posted up on the senior wall?
i don't think we had that ?

21. Did you have a job your senior year?
yeah, I worked as a filing clerk for Dynamic Chiropractic.

22. Who did you date?
Jason K. the whole stinkin year. till the week before I went to college and dumped him. yup.

23. Where did you go most often for lunch?
Closed Campus. So, I ate bagels every day for lunch (which my mother packed for me)

24. Have you gained weight since then?
um, actually, I dont think so.

25. What did you do after graduation?
Went to Biola.

not the Easter I expected.

This is the first year I spent Easter without my family.
It was also (notably) my first Easter without an Easter Basket.
I sort of expected Easter to be a bust this year.

For starters, I dropped Jamie (if you don't know who Jamie is, then you must not have seen or heard from me in the last month) off at the airport at 9:25 am. Not the most pleasant way to start my Easter holiday (to put it lightly). I am no good with these things.

Then, I got to church a half an hour late. And I was by myself. On easter.
But Kristin (thank the Lord for Kristin) saved me a seat. And the sermon was incredible. And there were free scones and juice boxes! And I went to Kristin and Amanda's for Easter lunch and was surrounded by good friends and I ate a LOT of good food. And I drank alcohol (yup, I can again!) -- but not too much. :) And Dan from Sherwood came over and we watched Space Ghost on You Tube (and David Hasselhoff videos) and we played cards and had a delightfully relaxing holiday.

And even though I was physically and emotionally exhausted, when I finally went to bed (2 am), I fell into a deep and peaceful sleep. I haven't slept that well in weeks.

To mimic my mom's blog/chipper text message -- "He is Risen, Indeed!".
Its true, He has risen.
So simple (and so true).

Christians can be punk rock, too. (or not)

This is from an email I got from a Christian venue in Ohio today. They wanted to book one of our bands (which is not a Christian band) and sent over a list of "rules of conduct" for the bands that play their venue. Read it and weep, folks. You can't put a price on entertainment that is this good.

Must be Christian music!
-you are expected to have some kind of ministry, whatever you are comfortable with, we are expecting you to open with prayer
- we can provide pa system, but you must provide mics, cords, stands

-We are open Tues. thru Saturday, we have country, gospel, bluegrass, some acoustic on Thurs., heavy rock on Fri and all kinds on sat. We predominately book 2 bands a night

-Featured bands share full love offering taken up for them. All bands are expected to partner in the advertising and bring customers with them. Let their friends know about the show.

-Opening acts are usually solo or duets , they are not at this time compensated, they are expected to stay for the whole show, it's polite

-all artist can sell their merchandise, space and a table will be provided

-show start at 7:30 PM on weekdays, 8 on Saturday and, load-in is between 6-6:30 PM

- the MustardSeed will advertise in 5 different location around Columbus, Ohio, band should consider some supporting ads

-please bring a picture or poster to hang on the wall of your band, with your contact info

-please do not bring food in from the outside, we will provide some coffee and water, we have food for sale .

- If you need to cancel 2 weeks notice is required! It is the way Christians would act

FIRE!

I just watched two houses blow up.
Ok, ok, not blow up.
But it was the biggest fire these eyes have ever seen.
and there were firemen on crane/ladder things and hoses and lots of water and smoke.
and I did hear a loud(ish) thud/explosion and then the flames got very large.
It was amazing to watch.
in the words of Kevin, the intern -- we were "rubberneckers".

ME AS A SUPERHERO

Tuesday, March 28, 2006

a bit of silliness, really.

There are a lot of things to be written, but do I have the guts to write them?
Probably not. That's the catch with having such a painfully self-aware online account of one's existence.

I am sitting on my couch, next to my sister Danielle, as she watches Pride and Prejudice (the new one). I recently watched this movie and dismissed it for its unrealistic romantic notions. RUBBISH, if you will. Danielle called it girl porn. I claimed that it left me with an "acute sense of lonliness". But here she is watching it nonetheless. I think she is trying to prove something to me.

I think she wants to prove to me that maybe Mr. Darcy does exist and maybe we don't have to be the skeptical Strannigans and maybe love like this is possible?

Well, maybe, Danielle. MAYBE.
But I still don't buy Keira Knightley's version of it all.
I like my own little rendition much more.

p.s. I met someone.

today, i am enormously happy.
I like this feeling.
the only thing that would make me happier (in this particular moment) would be knowing that I could go to Disneyland on Sunday. Because I really want to go, I just don't know if I can. Let's cross our fingers, folks.

call me crazy, but...

I don't think I like texas. Or music festivals. or drunk people. or live music in general?

Let me explain.

DAY ONE.

I arrived in Texas around 5 pm on wednesday evening. I immeadiately went to the hotel to meet up with the other Militia peeps - and we grabbed a bit to eat at "Aussies" across the street. I got a blackened catfish sandwich, which was unsatisfactory in every way. We then made our way into down town Austin for the musical goings-ons of SXSW. The Colour played at 7, but I missed their set. Instead, I went to the Beauty Bar for the Atlantic Records party and caught Say Anything (also unsatisfactory). I met a few booking agents, stood around akwardly, and drummed my fingers on whatever surfaces were available to me.

Then I met up with the Colour and we snuck into see Of Montreal at Emo's in Austin. We weren't really into that either and meandered towards the infamous "Red Bull House" - the Austin Mecca of irresponsible drinking and "networking". Due to poor directions and a general sense of exhaustion, I never made it to the Red Bull House. The Colour were kind enough to take me back to my hotel. This was nearing 2 am. Day 1 ends with no real excitement.

DAY TWO.
I meander out of bed around 10:30. Paul and I set about making arrangements for our Militia Group day party at Latitdue 30. We have to get the gift bags together, and this proves to be much more complicated than I imagined. I was starving, but there was no time for food. We got to the venue, stuffed bags, distributed goodies, and walked quickly about as any party planners do the day of a big event. Rory went and got us Chipotle burritos around 1:30 pm. My stomach was grateful. There is general stress about the guest list for the party, our bands start arriving into town -- but with some Jack Daniels and Amstel Lights, everyone seems to mellow out a bit. David Bazan (yes, Pedro the Lion) proves to be a great DJ and the Cold War Kids come around to say hello.

Then we hop about to a few parties -- I catch the Cold War Kids at the Levis/Fader party, some girl rapper at the IHEARTCOMIX party, and my friends Sub Rosa at the Speakeasy. I grab a sub from Jimmy Jons. It was the worst Tuna I've had. Then, its the Militia Group showcase. DUN DUN DUN. This goes off with out a hitch -- the crowd loves it, the bands love it, The Appleseed Cast and I had a few drinks together, and a good time was had by all. I was left with an overwhelming sense of pride for my label and a love for my job. Once again, my Militia co-workers dissapeared but I made it back to the hotel around 2 am thanks to Fielding.

DAY THREE.
Today, I don't leave the hotel till 1 pm. I grab yet another sub (this time, egg salad. and its still terrible) and wander to the Performing Songwriter Party. BORRRRRING. They had incense burning and some terrible adult contemporary band. I went and caught the Cold War Kids again at the Drink and then I wandered with Paul to the Paste party. This proved to be another adult contemporary party (Over the Rhine and Jamie Cullum were playing) with really bad Nachos. Yes, I know I've complained about the food quite a bit -- but let me tell you people, it was BAD. and I was sorely dissapointed.

I caught the Flatstock exhibit at the convention center, which was quite impressive. It was booth after booth of poster art from every different era/artist/genre - and you could purchase most everything there. I bought a print of Johnny Cash's mug shots from prison - it was pink. Yes, I know, how very Warhol of me.

Then, it was our last and final SXSW event -- our Beauty Bar Party with a performance by Brandtson. I was in charge of the list and the door -- so I sat at the front all night and checked people in. It was fun (sortof). I like being in charge and all that, but I don't like being tied down. Eventually, I left my post and let anyone in our party so I could watch Brandtson. That was pretty awesome of me.

The rest of the night I wandered with various friends in various bands. I made new friends, kindof got asked out (by an attractive male), and finally graced the Red Bull House. It was everything I thought it would be and more -- something akin to a giant frat party but with only music industry geeks. I could only take a half hour of its madness before I retired to my hotel. Once again, I hit the sack around 2 am.

So, that was my week. Maddenning and productive all at the same time. It had its moments. I never had real Texas BBQ, so I suppose I will just have to wait for next year.

DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS! (CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP)

See you kids in a few days.
I am off to Austin for the noise pollution-rific SXSW 06 festival. I tried making myself some semblance of a schedule today. My oh my, that was a laugh. There's iis really no possible way to schedule it all. so, despite what my rigid personality says -- I am going to adopt the "go with the flow" mentality for this trip. Well, I will aim for that. No promises, I may go into total meltdown mode.

I am more nervous than excited (but that could be the triple caramel macciato talking) about this trip. I know I will forget a million things. I am in charge of a guest list of 600 names that I forgot to alphabetize, so I will have to work on that on the plane.

eh, its an adventure. To infinity and beyond.
Right?

My heart hurts for my dear friend, Dave. His dad committed suicide this week.

I don't know if these things are blog appropriate but I can't help but say something.

The whole thing makes me angry and sad.
I guess all I can say is my love and prayers are with the Price family. and I am sorry.

feelings feelings feelings
so my sister wants me to blog about my feelings.

i feel like i have to pee every 5 minutes. and i feel when it rains that I drink unhealthy amounts of coffee. and i feel that the oscars are hollywood propaganda bullshit and I don't even know why I bother watching them. probably because its an excuse to see friends and eat hot dogs?

but, really, I am feeling good overall. I made a decision to cut my hair, and I think that is a good decision. i haven't actually done it yet but I like thinking about it.

so, that's the haps people.

SHOWS YOU MAY OR MAY NOT BE INTERESTED IN BUT I WILL BE THERE SO YOU'VE GOT THAT TO LOOK FORWARD TO.
Neko Case at Amoeba on Weds night.
The Appleseed Cast / Minus the Bear/ Crustal Skulls at the Glasshouse on Thurs night.
The Holy Fire/fielding/Controlling the Famous at The Scene Bar (in Glendale) on Fri night (with OPEN BAR from 8:30 to 9:30). Cold war kids CD release at Detroit bar on Saturday. so my week is shot.

a new kind of homesick.

I know I have been writing in blips and lists as of late, and for that I apologize. I'm a busy little bee, ok?

but, quickly, I will meditate on things of the past.

I think I miss the good old days. The days of the Triniti and our world domination and sporadic dance parties and El Patio. I am homesick for an era, if that is possible. I feel so far from that. so adult. I love my life and my apartment and my job and my group of friends. its just different than before. Ever since I stayed the night at Becca's and we drank champagne and looked at her pictures I have felt this inexplicable twinge of nostalgia. I even recall bemoaning (in my overly nostalgic state) "Those were better times".

tis true - Bob Dylan said it best: "The times are a' changin"
But, the times aren't better or worse.
they've just simply changed. and for a control freak like myself, I suppose I welcome change with wary arms.

3 day weekend, here I come...

and I couldnt be more thrilled.

THANK YOU FOR BEING BORN, GEORGE WASHINGTON.

if you're lucky, I might even blog about what a good time I am having. but probably not.

I haven't had time to report in a while but I saw Jeff Tweedy and he changed my life and I had a nominal but nice valentines that was interrupted by one bittersweet text message and i made funny valentines and i went to the prospector and i hung out with sherwood (i like them) and I swiffered my floor. not necessarily in that order.

I'm out like a trout.

gypsy death and you.

on a day like today, eating a soy noodle bowl in silence in the conference room seems particularly unpleasant.

my apologies to the seahawks

Ah, to be sitting.
I am half-curled on my red courdoroy couch, complete with braids and black velvet track pants. It feels nice to be sitting. I should unpack another box or two - possibly hang up my clothes or pick up any number of things scattered on my living room floor. Alas, I have no motivation; no gusto, if you will.

Next saturday will be my first day off of work in 3 weeks. I work at The Militia Group (hereafter referred to at TMG for reasons of pure laziness) during the week and I have worked for Haken at tradeshows for the last 2 weekends. I really shouldn't complain. After all, I am in dire need of money. And work equals money. So, I have that going for me. But, I must say that I am tired. Really, really tired.

So while you all are enjoying the game/commercials/beer/snacks/etc - I am going to sit right here and listen to Bob Dylan. I might turn up the heater and light a candle. And I might pay a visit to the Bluth family a little later, but only if I am feeling really crazy.

on the accomplishment scale of 1 - 10

i got a .2 today

I cannot concentrate for the life of me.

I spent hours on the phone with people and it all amounted to nothing

I saved $2 at quiznos, so that was nice.

and now my co-worker is blasting latin jazz and I cannot hear myself think and all I want to do is finish these five tours.

its 6:30

and i feel like I have 5 hours more of work to do today

and what am I doing?

writing about it in my blog.

that's the funny part.

party like its 1999.

thanks to my new friends over at William Morris (the proverbial 'man' when it comes to booking) I got in free to the Imogen Heap show at the El Rey last night. I saw David Spade and Julie Delpy. Not a bad live performance, but I was disenchanted with the staggering amount of burly looking females shouting "YOU GO GIRL" during Imogen's set. Sort of a killjoy.

then, we headed over to the Roxy.
and I saw Prince. and he looked exactly like this (I think it was the same jacket)

he was playing guitar and singing backup for "Tamar", his newest protege.
at one point he yelled out onstage "I need ice cream! get me ice cream!"
and then he took off his jacked and unbuttoned his shirt.
I was standing next to Queen Latifah.
what a night.

the money pit

still no gas (or showers, or cooking, or heat, etc)

and I came home last night at 1:00 am to a delightful inch of water that covered my bathroom and hallway floors. it was seeping into the bedroom and kitchen as well.

a flood! a deluge!

in my new apartment!

in the words of kevin, my flood rescue comissioner: "your apartment is a massacre"

back in business

I am back.
true to Lindsay style, I have hit the ground running.
I am now working on 4 - 5 tours for March. I am the 'default' booking agent for 7 artists.
i love it.

but do you know what I do not love?
that my gas in my new apartment got shut off and its freezing and I haven't showered.
plus, I ate lentils and apples for lunch.
yes, I am a hippy.
just for today.

Four of them were named Matt.

My traveling companion is Matt Mayott (pictured here)

note to self

The Old Spaghetti Warehouse is not the same as the Old Spaghetti Factory.

The latter is a nice - yet kitchy - family style Italian dining experience.

The Warehouse, however, is not quite that. The Old Spaghetti warehouse is Salem, Oregon's pathetic mock-up of the much nicer chain establishment. Think cafteria dining - meets dime store decor - meets t-shirts sloaganeering such phrases as "In Pasta We Trust".

Danielle and I drove down to Salem today to take our youngest sister, Candyce, out for her birthday dinner. We braved the elements (there is quite a storm) in order to take her out for a Spaghetti dinner -- her personal favorite.

Unfortunately for all parties involved, the replacement of the word "factory" with the word "warehouse" made a big difference. We were greeted with uncomfortable bright lighting, an oversized and ugly dining room, and a few scattered tables made with bed frames (not the S. Factory lavish Italian looking bed frames - these were more the type that had belonged to Ma and Pa Kettle.)

I would like to tell you that the prices were good. They were fair at best.
I would like to tell you that the food was good. It was, in fact, terrible.
I would like to tell you that I had a great time. Nonetheless, I did have a good time.

Its good to have sisters who will giggle about birthday dinner fiasco's with you all the ride home.

two by two

The Daves.
they call me every day and are the best listeners I know. and they really love me and believe in me and have neverending delightful things to say. they also hate that I compare them to each other. they don't have much in common - but they are the most constant sources of communication in my life. I love the Daves.

The Matts.
My sister has her own set of Matts (hers are Matt B's. Mine are Matt M's).
My Matts do not have much in common at all. The one thing that is true about the Matts is that they constantly baffle me. I don't think I will ever figure either one of them out. I have spent more time worrying over the Matts perceptions of me than most other people. For some reason, I love them both dearly and they love me occasionally. And they have the strangest way of showing it.

The Erics (Trine, Trickett, Tobin)
All good looking, relatively charming, dark haired, pompous little boys: the whole lot of 'em. The first two have been nothing but a rollercoaster. The third -- well, I don't really know him yet so he doesn't count. But if he's anything like the others (and he probably is) then I am steering clear. Erics are trouble.

The Phils.
I have PHIL tattooed on my back (its short for Phillipians). I like my tattoo, but I do not like Phils. Too many years of twenty something (and teenage) angst spent on the Phils. You are no good.

And then there's Drew.
And there is only one of him.
And he is an anomaly to me.
